Life on earth can be summed up in two words: the flowers and the bees. Without bees no flowers, without flowers no food and without food no people.
So bees are essential to the food supply. But this natural cycle is under pressure; the honeybee is dying en masse. According to beekeeper and biochemist BartJan Fernhout, this bee death is caused by the varroa mite. A parasite that kills bee populations by the viruses the mite carries. Brandpunt made two documentaries of the cultivation projects Arista Bee Research is doing in Hawaii and in the Netherlands to research how to control the varroa mite. Watch the two-part documentary?
