Protein crops contribute to biodiversity in the landscape. This is because they provide a flowering crop over a fairly long period of time, and thus are a nectar and pollen source for many insects. 

 

This is a nice bonus in the transition from animal to plant proteins. Willemijn Cuijpers' research included studying the effect of natural pollinators, such as bumblebees and wild bees, on field bean yields. "Our method of participatory research proves its added value, we see time and again that it also inspires farmers," she said.
